René Brooks is guest-hosting Distraction through November and December! René is an ADHD coach, writer and advocate who also has ADHD herself. From Black Girl, Lost Keys website: René Brooks is a late-life ADHD success story. After being diagnosed 3 times as a child (7, 11 and 25) she was finally able to get the treatment she deserved. René decided that her passion for helping others should be put toward people with this disorder who are struggling in silence or shame. She started Black Girl, Lost Keys to empower Black women with ADHD and show them how to live well with the condition.

This week our guest host, René Brooks answers YOUR questions about ADHD!

Today's discussion includes questions from our listeners about navigating the ups and downs of romantic relationships when both partners have ADHD (something René has personally experienced) and how parents can prioritize the best ways to help newly-diagnosed ADHD kids. René points out that just because your child is doing okay in school, doesn't mean everything is okay. She shares a few insights that parents should be aware of outside of academics.

Do you have a question for René to answer in a future episode? Write an email or record a voice memo and send it to connect@distractionpodcast.com.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) is a condition that is still being studied however it can affect many with ADHD.

Dr. Debby Feinberg joined René earlier this week to talk about Vertical Heterophoria in the episode Dizziness, Headaches, Anxiety and the Little-Known Connection Between Your Eyes and ADHD and returns today to talk about how the ears play a role in BVD as well, and how noise-cancelling technology can help struggles with sound processing and loud noises.

When our guest-host was diagnosed with Vertical Heterophoria in 2015 it changed her life, as you'll hear her say in this episode. Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) is a condition that is still being studied however it can affect many with ADHD. Anxiety, dizziness, motion sickness, post-concussive symptoms, and interestingly-- feeling overwhelmed in large stores, can all be clues that a person might be suffering from BVD.

Today's guest is Dr. Debby Feinberg who is performing pioneering work in this area. She's developed a test to identify it and a simple way to fix it that utilizes prism lenses.

Today our guest host, René Brooks, shares a little behind-the-scenes conversation with our producer, Sarah Guertin, about how it feels to learn you have ADHD, and how she's grown and changed over the years since being diagnosed.

"It’s like the comparison (to neurotypicals) is an unfair one and we’re really comparing to people who actually don’t exist... these perfectly organized, always on time, always emotionally regulated people-- it’s a fantasy. So we’re setting ourselves up to meet this unmeetable standard and then we get burnt out and frustrated in the process."

Today our guest host, René Brooks, shares some of the details about her own journey with ADHD and reflects on some of the more serious struggles she has experienced along the way. The Black Girl, Lost Keys creator talks openly about leaving an abusive marriage, checking herself into a psychiatric hospital, as well as what it was like to lose her job and no longer be able to afford her ADHD medication.

René also shares how she began to build back her life by learning about her own ADHD, creating the super popular and amazing ADHD resource, Black Girl, Lost Keys blog, becoming a coach; and how she thinks everyone who has ADHD needs to find community.

"You feel normal. And you start to see these things that you do, or the impulsive way you behave not as evidence that you're a terrible person who will never get it right, but just as part and parcel of this ADHD thing that you have."

Today René shares a quick follow-up to our previous episode this week, "We've Got the 'Eat' and 'Drink' Parts of the Holidays Down, but the 'Be Merry' Part? Not So Much," with a much-needed reminder about the importance of asking for help with tasks that are difficult for you.

As you'll hear our guest-host say in this episode, "In 2021 I learned to get more comfortable with asking for help with things that I struggle doing, to the point where I avoid doing them." René talks about a couple of the ways she's gotten help and the difference it's made in her life.
